Here’s a summary of their advice.

1) Always ensure that your own spiritual life is solid. 2) Lean heavily on historically rooted Carmelite theology. Go to the source (St. Teresa, St John of the Cross – Dubay, though not Carmelite – is very sound in this area) and know them well yourself. Avoid the many popular distortions (i.e. Centering Prayer etc.). Gain a clear understanding of sound Church teachings on Dogmatic, Ascetical, and Mystical theology. Don’t underestimate the value of dogmatic theology in spiritual direction. 3) Read, study, and practice what you would offer to others (as with the suggested reading path on this blog - very Carmelite friendly by the way). For those who have a solid theological background a text well worth reading for Spiritual Directors is Adolph Tanquerey's "The Spiritual Life." 4) Spiritual Direction is an art that improves with practice. Be aware of the times when you don’t have the answers and be quick to seek help from those who know what you do not.

May you provide a powerful light on the spiritual path of those whom God gives you to serve.D.A.
