- Spiritual Direction vs. Confession

Q: Is spiritual direction just a more involved form of confession?
A: No – spiritual direction can include confession (if you warn the priest ahead of time that you would like to receive the sacrament). The key difference between confession and spiritual direction is that confession is only concerned with what sins have been committed, repentance, and absolution. Spiritual direction is concerned with the root causes of sin and the corresponding path to virtue.
